It was an incredible event with an incredible turnout. California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass asked Los Angeles Trade-Technical College to host one of the largest regional job fairs in the state, where employers would come with real jobs for real people. Speaker Bass sees Trade Tech as an important center of her district and this neighborhood, and she felt this was another way to provide key employment services and resources to her constituents. And the Job and Resource Fair was spectacular! More than 3,000 people attended and most were from the community. There were more than 50 employers from the MTA to Target to Phat Energy (solar) to Citibank, virtually all who had jobs to offer. In all, there were maybe 300 jobs available, and we hope that they will be filled by people in our community. Unfortunately neither Speaker Bass nor State senator Curren Price could attend due to an emergency vote in Sacramento. But there were some special workshops coordinated by the EDD, one was conducted by our very own Marcia Wilson from workforce development on green jobs and training. The session was packed. There was another workshop on resume-writing and another on dressing for a job interview. Non-profits also attended giving out information on services for those looking for jobs. It was truly a day of giving hope to our community and it took place right here at Trade Tech. This event would not have been possible without the help of numerous folks from Trade Tech, most importantly our student employment center director Helen Beaird who worked for six weeks in putting this event together. Without her expertise, this event would not have happened. Congratulations to our partners and those that participated, and we hope to let you know about those success stories of folks who obtained work through this important event.
