It is a glorious day at Trade Tech! Cosmetology student Angie Gomez has captured the nationwide Junior Style Stars competition, including $56,000 in cash and prizes. Her hair style was chosen out of more than 300 competitors and this morning in the A-building, world-reknown hair stylist and salon owner Allen Edwards, walked into our cosmetology classroom unannounced and surprised Angie with a check and a list of prizes that is incredible. Angie was just overwhelmed and her fellow students were screaming, applauding and of course crying with joy as Angie was given the national award. Junior Styles Star representative Paul Barry listed conferences and hair style shows across the country where Angie will be given expense-paid trips to attend. Her styles will be featured in magazines and she will be tutored under some of the finest stylists in the country. This morning stations NBC, Fox, Telemundo and KTLA were represented and it’s likely that she will be on the news this afternoon and maybe tonight. It is the first time in history that a community college students has won the top prize. In addition, Angie gave very heartfelt thanks to the instructors in cosmetology, especially chair Marilyn Maine, who also will be given an all-expense paid trip to the cosmetology educators conference in Orlando. Angie is a GAIN/CalWORKS student, a single mother of three and a very humble young lady, who is very thankful for blessings she has received. She told the packed audience inside the A-building that she would like to pursue her degree at Cal-State Los Angeles and then come back to Trade Tech as an instructor. She is tribute to her classmates, her family and this college.
Congratulations Angie!

Congratulations Angie,
Your head was truly a work of art and is just magnificent. What a wonderful person you are and I am so happy that you won! I watched the competition and said " if this head does not win, then I am going to have to start writing letters".
You are AWESOME and I am so proud of you. You have a great mentor in Ms. Maine, I know because she is my sister. May you win all of your dreams, you deserve it!
