President’s Weekly Message
Good morning to you, April 16th, 2019—
We are moving deeper into the Spring semester and we want to make sure you are doing well in class and taking advantage of appropriate student services.
When ASO elections for new officers take place on April 23rd and 24th, there will also be a vote about a Metro U-Pass for LATTC students at a dramatically reduced rate. This will be a vote of all LATTC students in our credit classes on the creation of a student fee to support student transportation needs. LA Metro has agreed to a pilot with at least one LACCD college to provide U-Passes to all credit students wanting to use rail and bus lines, from Metro and six partnering agencies. A majority vote in support of this referendum would:
—Add a student fee for all credit students of $13 per primary semester, which is $3.25 per month (for Fall/Spring) and $8 per intersession (Winter/Summer) for a period of up to three years. The current rate for individual purchase of the U-Pass at LATTC is $165 per semester.
—A yes vote will allow LATTC to partner with LA Metro on a three-year pilot to provide the Metro U-Pass at no cost for all credit students wishing to use transportation.
—The transit fee and transit U-Pass will start in January 2020 at the earliest, if it is passed by a majority of the student voters and the college is also selected for the pilot program by LA Metro.
—The U-Pass includes the following partnering agencies: LA Metro, Culver CityBus, Gardena Transit (GTrans), LADOT Local and DASH, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Torrance Transit
In addition to the UPass vote, we will be holding ASO elections next week. Thanks to all of you who attended the candidates’ forum both in the day and in the evening. Those speaking were:

Vote on Canvas next week from April 23rd through 24th.
Lots of things going on during the following week. It is National Reentry Week and we will be reaching out to all of our reentry students with resources and services. Events are focused on services we provide, those provided by our partners, job opportunities, and a Prop 47 Expungement Clinic. The week-long event is co-sponsored by the Mayor’s Office.
JOB AND CAREER EXPO/INTERVIEW FRENZY
Also, it’s time to get those resumes prepared because the annual Job Fair Expo is coming up and at last count, there will be 90 employers here, some ready to hire on that day. All students interested in jobs and careers need to stop by the North Campus Quad next Thursday, April 25th. But BEFORE that, next Tuesday there will be an interview frenzy workshop. Get ready for tips on being the best you can be at an interview.
We want to thank the Transfer Club for its efforts to support last week’s Transfer Week. The club held a panel with transfer experts offering information about the transfer process and how to be successful. Then Transfer Day was a huge success as more than 40 universities crowded into the North Quad to talk individually with students about transferring to their campus from Trade Tech. Our campus sends transfers all over the nation, thanks to the work of the LATTC Transfer Center and the help of the Transfer Club.
Lots of informational events coming up like our Disability Awareness Day and Tools for the Trades Rally on 4/24, Guided Pathways Day of Learning on 4/25, and so much more. Please keep up with all of the communications that will be coming your way.
And it’s time to sign up for classes in our two summer sessions. Make sure you study the schedule, choose your classes and enroll now.
Looking forward to a great couple weeks.
