President’s Weekly Message

Good Monday morning to you, April 22nd, 2019—

I hope you had a great weekend and are ready for a very busy week ahead when it comes to events on campus.

There are some important votes taking place this week. You will be selecting your ASO leaders for next year, along with participating district-wide in the selection of the Student Trustee on the Board of Trustees. And when you vote for new officers on April 23rd and 24th, you will also have the chance to vote on a Metro U-Pass for LATTC students at a dramatically reduced rate. This vote of all LATTC students, if supported, will create a student fee for a dramatically reduced rate for a U-Pass. LA Metro has agreed with the District to create a pilot with at least one LACCD college to provide U-Passes to ALL credit students (our students who pay fees), from Metro and six partnering agencies. A majority vote in support of this referendum would:

  • Add a student fee for all credit students of $13 per primary semester, which is $3.25 per month (for Fall/Spring) and $8 per intersession (Winter/Summer) for a period of up to three years. The current rate for individual purchase of the reduced fare U-Pass at LATTC is $165 per semester.
  • A yes vote will allow LATTC students to partner with LA Metro on a three-year pilot to provide the Metro U-Pass at no additional cost for all credit students wishing to use transportation.
  • The transit fee and transit U-Pass will start in January 2020 at the earliest, if it is passed by a majority of the student voters and the college is also selected for the pilot program by LA Metro.
  • The U-Pass includes unlimited use of the following partnering agencies: LA Metro, Culver CityBus, Gardena Transit (GTrans), LADOT Local and DASH, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, Torrance Transit. Please vote.

First off, our graduation committee has done some incredible work and has secured USC’s Galen Center for our graduation venue. Graduation is now scheduled for Tuesday June 4th at 6:00pm. It is a gorgeous venue, which will make our commencement even more inspiring. So PLEASE make sure if you are eligible to take part in graduation for an associate degree or industry certificate, to apply for graduation and RSVP your attendance. The Galen Center also has wonderful sight lines, so your family will have nice comfortable seats with a clear view of the graduation class and stage.

See the Graduation Website for the most up to date information on ceremony.

This Tuesday April 23rd, we will be celebrating Earth Day with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony in the 24th Street Parking Structure. Please come out and join us at 11:00am on Tuesday on the 6th floor, as we hold an event which will focus on the green energy we produce through our solar installation, and how it is used as a training lab for students. In addition, we will highlight our 25 electric car chargers on the bottom floor powered by our solar cells, and the BlueLA cars on Grand Avenue just outside the structure that have major discounts for our students.. We plan to have food and music and student participation, along with a number of our partners .

This week is National Re-Entry Week and our campus has been deeply involved in providing opportunities to those who have been through our justice system. This past week LATTC was honored for its work with the re-entry population by the LA City Council. This week, we will offer some supports to those re-entry students on our campus who are supporting each other and learning what supports are available here at LATTC and with our partners in the community. See the flyer below to learn what is happening each day, including today.

On Tuesday, don’t forget we’re also doing the interview frenzy in preparation of the LATTC Job and Career Expo on Thursday.

On Wednesday, 4/24, we will conducting the annual Trike-a-thon in support of the CDC. Come on out and watch the kids ride around the North Quad, and then the campus adult teams will compete after that. It’s always fun.

Then right after the Trike-a-thon on Wednesday at noon, the Tools for the Trades Rally will take place in the South Tent. Students from more than 20 programs will receive tools scholarships from the LATTC Foundation in order to assist them. Many classes will be attending to learn which students have been selected as scholarship winners. For students selected for Tools Scholarships, the Tools Dinner is set for Tuesday, May 28th, at 6pm where scholarship winners and family members are invited and the actual tools will be awarded.  Please come out to learn the winners and support your classmates.

Please prepare for this Thursday’s Job Fair and Career Expo which will be located in the North Tent this year. There will be more than 90 employers attending, and several will be doing interviews and hiring on the spot. So prepare your resumes and get ready for interviews. You also come on out and learn the latest in employment trends.

Then on Friday the Design and Media Arts Symposium will take place and it’s always a great showcase of some great student work. Come on by from 9:00am to 1:00pm in the South Tent.

Please be sure you take part in the events that interest you. These opportunities do not happen on most campuses. This is our commitment to you, but we do need your involvement to make the effort truly worthwhile.

It should be a great week. Please take part.
