LATTC’s Spring Semester Starts Monday February 8th, 2010

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

The Spring semester 2010 starts Monday February 8th and the campus is working very hard to handle growing enrollment despite budget challenges at the state level. We also have opened two new South Campus buildings to service student needs. The ST-building contains Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Counseling, EOPS, Gain/CalWORKS, the Business Office and all of the other student service offices, as well as the campus administration. The TE-building contains behavioral and social sciences, along with mathematics, speech and child development classrooms, lecture halls and offices. Some things you need to know to make the first few days less hectic.

  • Visit the Information tent just to the west of the ST-building during Welcome Week, to ask any questions about Trade Tech. Those people will be wearing purple shirts.
  • Student services will have tables with people who can help you with specific issues, to make your LATTC experience that much easier.
  • If you need to access services at the windows in the ST-building, you will need a number in our new queue system so that you can be serviced.
  • Make sure you go to your scheduled class for its first meeting. If you don’t, you will be dropped.
  • See a counselor to help select those classes available.
  • Remember Friday February 12th, Monday February 15th and Tuesday February 16th are school holidays. There will be NO classes. Tuesday, February 16th is actually a non-instructional day, so no classes will be held, but other college offices will be open.
  • Be patient. We will do our very best to serve every student. That’s what we’re about

Welcome to Los Angeles Trade-Technical College.

LATTC Continuing Students: Don’t Wait to Enroll!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

The list of filled Spring semester classes at Trade Tech is already quite long, and growing daily. That can be attributed to the state’s economic sluggishness, the reduced number of admissions within the UC and Cal State systems and the rising popularity of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. If you are a continuing student, do not wait to enroll for Spring classes. Do it today either online or in person.  You may not have many choices next week or once the semester begins. Adding classes also will be difficult because of the numbers. If you cannot get to campus during the week, you will be able to access services on Saturday February 6th, between 9am and 2pm.

MTA Machine is Running Again, TAP Cards Are Available

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

As of 3:30pm on Tuesday, January 26th, a new TAP card machine was delivered to the Trade Tech Business Office. After some tests, it appears the machine is working fine, and will allow students to purchase and load new TAP cards for the Spring semester. The TAP cards allow any full-time student to ride the Metro system (buses and trains) between February 8th and June 3rd. If a full-time student turns in their old card, the cost is $15 for the new card. If a student does not have the old card or is purchasing a card for the first time, the cost is $20. We encourage all full-time students to take advantage of this transit value.

You will be able to purchase your new TAP card at the Business Office in the new Student Services (Juniper) building. Students who return their old TAP card will be able to purchase the new one for $15. Students without their old TAP card or who are purchasing one for the first time, will be charged $20. The TAP cards will be good from February 8th through June 3rd and will allow the cardholder to ride any of the Metro bus and train lines. On occasion, cardholders will be asked to show a student ID while riding.

BP Offers Scholarships to Trade Tech Students

Friday, December 11th, 2009

DSC_4680

The BP America Foundation Scholarship Luncheon was truly an uplifting experience. Ms. Renee Madyun, one of our chemical technology instructors, has developed a spectacular relationship with industry partners, and in this case, BP America. Representing the company and offering significant support was B.V. Castillo, a BP executive. She presented four $1000 ($500 each semester) scholarships to Trade Tech students studying in the areas of chemical and process technology.

The student scholarship recipients were Jesus Herrera, Alvaro Viveros, Mauricio Rodriguez and Aaron Henry, here standing with BP representative B.V. Castillo. Each of the students gave heartfelt thanks and testimony about how the scholarship will help their education. LATTC President Chip Chapdelaine, LATTC Foundation President Darryl Holter, LATTC Foundation Director Rhea Chung, Dean of Academic Affairs Vincent Jackson were all in attendance. Ms. Castillo also was presented with an award from the Trade Tech Foundation for her efforts in securing these scholarships.

DSC_4677But the real driver behind this effort is of course, chem tech instructor Renee Madyun who has developed this relationship with BP America and Ms. Castillo. Her tireless efforts have led to an industry task force that is committed to helping Trade Tech students and this campus. There are very few who have put in the time she has, to grow their program’s reputation. Congratulations to Renee and her department colleagues, and of course, our student scholarship recipients!

Attention Trade-Tech Students! Regarding Accreditation

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

There is a misinformation campaign being conducted on-campus dealing with our campus accreditation. It is important that you know and understand the facts regarding our status. Information is being distributed that in inaccurate and serves only to hurt our accreditation response efforts.

  • Your current credits won’t be valid because the campus is on probation.  FALSE!

Los Angeles Trade-Technical College is FULLY accreditated, and all courses will count toward a degree, a certificate or a university transfer. Probation does not affect the validity of any courses. It is a request from an independent accreditation team to provide more information about the educational aspects of the college. No campus within the LACCD district has ever lost its accreditation.

  • Certain administrators botched the first accreditation report. FALSE!

Many people worked very hard on the first self-study. To say their efforts were “botched” or to lay blame on individuals is counter-productive and wrong. The accreditation team placed us on probation for procedural and documentation issues. It had nothing to do with the efforts of those who heroically completed the self-study.

  • The administration is not responding to the accreditation team’s recommendations. FALSE!

Most faculty, staff AND administration understand the importance of this accreditation response and have been working diligently to develop the most comprehensive response ever issued by Los Angeles Trade-Technical College is its 80-year history. Dozens of people have been working very hard on program review, communication, dialogue, participatory governance, institutional integrity, student learning outcomes and planning and budget, and each of these areas have been gathering supporting documents. We have hired consultants and administrators, extremely knowledgeable about this process. We are ready to shine!

  • The accreditation status led to cancellation of the winter session. FALSE!

Our state funding crisis has led to a signififcant reduction in the winter session offerings. Our accreditation status is completely unrelated.

  • Spring semester will be cancelled midway through the semester because of accreditation. FALSE!

We are offering a full slate of Spring classes and many students already have registered. Once again, Trade Tech is fully accredited and our status will have no effect on the validity of the classes being offered during the upcoming semester. Our accreditation team won’t even issue its report on our visit until after the Spring semester ends.

We need you to be fully informed and not swayed by false accusations or rumors. LATTC has been around for a long time and we plan to be here for many more years. If you want more information, please visit our Accreditation Webpage at…

http://college.lattc.edu/accreditation/

You can also catch quick updates on:

We also plan some upcoming Open Forums to keep you up-to-date on your college’s efforts to make this the best accreditation visit possible. Know the truth!
