Latino heritage day was a great celebration of food, fun and mariachis. But it also gave Trade Tech students the opportunity to thank retiring Vice President of Student Services Ramon Castillo. The students gave him a gift and then he showed his singing voice and his dance moves.

Thousands of people attended our annual Job and Resource Fair this week. Students and community members were able to engage more than 70 employers, all of whom were hiring for actual jobs. GAIN/CalWORKs director Linda Cole and her team coordinates the Job Fair with the help of many community partners. This year’s event was another huge success, and showed a real response to the neighborhoods around the college. In addition to the employers, we also created an area strictly for resources, including such things as resume assessment and improvement.

It’s a Trade Tech tradition, and it has been re-energized by the LATTC Foundation. Tools for the Trades has made a huge comeback and you could tell just how excited students were at the annual Tools for the Trades rally this week. Hundreds of students came out to cheer for the winners from each of their career-technical disciplines. The momentum was evident and no one gets a crowd going like Carole Anderson. We need to thank the LATTC Foundation for resurrecting this program and making a real difference in supporting student success. Congratulations to the winners, we will post their names as soon as we receive the full list. The Tools distribution celebration will take place next week. It was a day of celebration of the life of a man who passed away 20 years ago to the day.

Our tribute to the life of Cesar Chavez was about his legacy and how it has affected our lives. There were Aztec dancers, David Esparza’s mother Ofelia who is an accomplished artist provided a piece for auction. Actor Ed Begley Jr. enlisted some students in performing a piece from his award-winning play “Cesar and Ruben”. He talked about carrying Cesar Chavez’s casket through the streets Delano. Juana Chavez-Thomas talked about her experiences as Cesar’s niece. The speeches were inspiring. Then the event moved inside for a silent auction, some salsa dancing and the delivery of scholarships to two members of the RISE club, Eriq Chavez and Silvia Manzano.  Counselor Deborah Campbell provided a touching reading of “The Farm Workers Prayer”. It was a fitting celebration of a wonderful life and certainly an inspiration to our students. Congratulations to everyone who was involved and there were many.

Participation in the event was excellent, and it was coordinated by the RISE Club, along with counselors Jamila Guerrero-Cantor, Christina Almada and Ana Munoz and staff  Roxanna Hernandez. Dean Luis Dorado handled emcee duties and coordinated ASO support.

The ASO gave some lifetime memberships at the Deans Honors Awards this semester as a way of saying thank you to some people who have supported students and the mission of Trade Tech. One of the honorees was Los Angeles County sheriff Lee Baca. The sheriff was gracious enough to attend our Deans Awards and he commented on the special day. He wanted to honor the students who have done so well in the classroom, and even mentioned his struggles in community college. Also given lifetime ASO memberships were Gary Hall from Twentieth Century Fox, and Stan Cassio, from New Edit. Both of these guys teach in Sheriff Baca’s merit program and have donated to Trade Tech. It was an event filled with hope and inspiration thanks to the deans, the sheriff, the other honorees, and of course our students who accomplish miracles every day. Congratulations to Dean Luis Dorado for making the event special for our students.

Day 1 Process
Tuesday, April 2, 2013
Veterans, Foster Care, EOPS, and DSPS Students Only!

VIP Check-in:
• Students will check in at their respective office with the exception of EOPS students.
• Hours of operation will be from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
• Foster Care students will check-in at the Veterans Student Center located in C-100
• A&R Staff will be available in each of the offices to help process CRF’s

Veteran’s and Foster Care VIP Registration (Veterans Student Center C-100)
• Student will check-in and staff will review students record for holds
• If students have holds, please refer them to the appropriate area to clear their holds
• If the student has no holds they will meet with a Counselor at the Veterans Student Center
• Counselors will be on hand to help students select their courses for the Summer 2013 Session
• Once they have selected their courses students will be given a Course Request Form (CRF)
• Once the CRF is processed this concludes their VIP Registration Process
• Processed CRF’s will be turned-in to Carolyn Clark or Mai Le at the end of the day

DSPS VIP Registration (DSPS Office E-110)
• Students will check-in and staff will review student’s record for holds
• If students have holds, please refer them to the appropriate area to clear their holds
• If the student has no holds they will meet with a Counselor at the DSPS Office
• Counselors will be on hand to help students select their courses for the Summer 2013 Session
• Once they have selected their courses students will be given a Course Request Form (CRF)
• Once the CRF is processed this concludes their VIP Registration Process
• Processed CRF’s will be turned-in to Carolyn Clark or Mai Le at the end of the day

EOPS VIP Registration (ASO Office C-105)
• Students will check-in and staff will review student’s record for holds

Summer 2013 VIP Registration
Day 2 Process
Wednesday, April 3, 2013
Open to all Trade Tech Students!

VIP Check-in:
• South Tent in the South Campus Quad
• Hours of operation will be from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
• All students must start at the Check-in
• 1 computer with DEC access will be ready for staff to check student holds

Students with no holds
• Will be given a VIP Pass to register for Summer 2013 Session
• They will go to TE-101 and view all open courses as of that morning
• Counselors will be available in TE-101 to help students with selecting courses
• Once they select their courses, students will be referred to Admissions staff assigned to
TE-101 to add their courses
• Admissions & Records staff will be there to process CRF’s
• 4 computers with DEC access will be ready for A&R staff to process CRF’s

Students with holds
• Will be referred to the appropriate location to clear their holds
• Once their hold is cleared they will return to the VIP Check-in to receive their VIP Pass
• They will go to TE-101 and view all open courses as of that morning
• They will then follow the no holds process

Online registration for all district students interested in the Summer session, begins on Monday April 8th.

If you have any questions about the VIP registration, you can always send us a message on the college Facebook. This priority registration is designed to help Trade Tech students acquire the classes necessary to secure their degree or certificate, so take advantage of the summer session offerings.

It is always one of the most gratifying events on campus because it speaks directly to student success. Dozens of students gathered in the South Tent to be honored with one of several scholarships delivered to those students with exemplary academic records, verifiable need and that commitment to complete their degree, certificate or transfer goal at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Dean Luis Dorado always has done an amazing job managing this critical type of financial aid, as well as putting together ceremonies that showcase student achievement and reward it with scholarships. He also has re-energized the support of the LATTC Foundation to provide a process to distribute these scholarships, and to keep them viable for many years to come. On March 13^th, 2013 scholarships totaling more than $36,000 were given out to deserving students by some of the LATTC Deans led by emcee Dean Dorado, two members of the LATTC Foundation and the Vice President of Student Services Ramon Castillo. In some cases, these scholarships will help keep students in school, will allow students to purchase necessary books and supplies and will actually change lives. Congratulations to all recipients

It is the single largest outreach event for the LAUSD on a community college campus. Hundreds of students converged on a Trade Tech last week for a day of tours and presentations. The students came from all over the city for a chance to see all of the programs available at our campus. Some of our disciplines and student services offered information and presentations under the tent, adding to the excitement of a tremendous day of recruitment. The added benefit is that 30 industry representatives also attended the event, so that Trade Tech students could ask them about trends and training in the construction technology field.

A truly collaborative effort between the county of  Los Angeles department of mental health and Los Angeles Trade-Technical led to a very special symposium on campus. “Mental Wellness Day: Bridge the Gap to Empowerment” offered tons of information, success stories and a a very honest look at a sometime difficult subject. Trade Tech’s EAP director Ashraf Hosseini put together a fabulous program that included staff and faculty from this college. There was a tent filled with resource tables and some great break-out sessions. The event attracted more than 200 people and provided a real sense of outreach to our community.
