Los Angeles Trade-Technical College has done a remarkable job as a partner with the Youth Build program. It is a program that touches the lives of young people in the Trade Tech community who otherwise have few career options. Utilizing our relationship with the Coalition for Responsible Community Development and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, the Youth Build program and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College have turned young people into healthy contributors to our society. The leadership of VP Leticia Barajas and Bridges coordinator Sylvia Ibarra has made this program very special, and today comes word of some of the fruits of their efforts. THREE of the six Helen D. Stoneman scholarship honorees selected from Youth Build graduates, went through the Trade Tech programs! It is a tribute to what we have grown. Congratulations to the entire team in Academic Affairs and WED.

Please welcome our two Deans of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development, Joseph Guerrieri (formerly Acting Dean) and Nicole Albo-Lopez. Our deans were selected based on a selection process that included job announcement posting, initial application screening, and oral interview conducted by the Dean Selection Committee* in Fall 2012. Four candidates were forwarded by the Dean Selection Committee to the next round that was comprised of a LATTC Dean Candidate Forum held on Monday, November 26th and open to the entire LATTC community. The College President reviewed the feedback and conducted the final interview to make the selection recommendation to the Chancellor.

Thank you to all who participated and contributed to the selection process either by serving on the Dean Selection Committee* or by providing feedback during the Dean Candidate Forum. Our process was meant to be transparent and inclusive of our college community.

Nicole began her second career as a community college advocate in 2003 when she accepted a part time position at Rio Salado College located in Tempe, Arizona. Over the last 9 years, she has served both faculty and administrative roles at the college. From 2006 – 2010 she served as the Faculty Chair, Clinical Dental Assisting and under her leadership, the college gained accreditation for the first fully online dental assisting program in the country. She was also instrumental with the building of the Community Dental Health Coordination program in conjunction with the American Dental Association. In 2010, Nicole was selected to be the Associate Dean of Instruction and while in that role she worked with a local high school district to create a concurrent enrollment dental assisting program allowing high school seniors to graduate with both a diploma and a college certificate of completion in dental assisting.

Most recently, Nicole served as the Interim Dean, Academic Affairs at Rio Salado and was instrumental with the college re-affirmation of accreditation. She was additionally responsible for overseeing the college’s allied health programs, curriculum division, institutional integrity department as well as the college’s institutional research office. She is dedicated to promoting a supportive, individualized, innovative educational environment where students are free to achieve their goals and educational dreams and is excited to join Trade Tech.

More than 50 LATTC Diesel Technology students attended the annual 2012 American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Bus & Paratransit Conference. This conference is held at a different city each year and this year it was held in Long Beach. It is the premiere conference for public transit. Transit companies from across the country attend to learn what are the present and future trends in transit, along with training and educational workshops and other special events like the national bus mechanic competition.

Diesel Technology instructor Jess Guerra made a presentation at the event and the students attended various technical training sessions, visited the new bus expo, and the mechanic competition finals. This is the first time that APTA has made special arrangements for students to attend, including programming special student-focused workshops that are designed for those interested in pursuing a career in transit.

“Very is very encouraging, honest, motivating to all her students.”

“She is very knowledgeable and makes it her mission to support the educational goals of her students.”

“The best professor I have had in two years at USC.”

“Not only is she incredibly brilliant, she is a very humble professor, who makes sure to teach us that we can be the best social workers ever.”

“She is great professor and is passionate about teaching research.”

“She goes above and beyond.”

Marcia received the award at the USC School of Social Work Dean’s Recognition Ceremony. A video of the awards ceremony is posted at: http://tinyurl.com/deansrecognition. [Note - That portion where Marcia Wilson is presented and receives the award is at 9:07 minutes into the ceremony video.]

Architecture and construction technology, specifically plumbing, created a unique class this winter intersession where the focus was sustainable landscaping. Since our climate is quite dry, how do we use technologies to get the most out of the water we have? Students in this class attacked that challenge. And what they developed is incredible. Thanks to LATTC instructors Marcela Oliva, Wally Hanley, Tim Slade and Willie Galvan for taking a leadership role on this project which can be seen along Flower Street.
