Congratulations Maria Solis on winning the 2014 Junior Style Stars National Competition!!!
Cosmetology Student Maria Solis is a National Champion!
It is really an incredible journey for Trade Tech student Maria Solis. Just six years ago, she received her GED and the single mom thought that cosmetology would make a great career since she loved helping people and creating hair styles. She enrolled at LATTC and under the tutelage of instructor Sondra Shackelford, Maria entered and won the Junior Style Stars bridal hairstyle 2014 national championship! Out of 350 some entries from private and public cosmetology students throughout the country, Trade Tech was declared the champion! Paul Barry from Junior Style Stars came and made the announcement on campus, and it was a complete surprise to Maria and the 100 or so cosmetology students gathered in Magnolia Hall’s atrium. Maria was overwhelmed as her name was announced. She hugged Ms. Shackelford and through her tears talked about how “teacher” as Maria refers to Sondra, refused to let her quit the program on at least two occasions. Now with her instructor’s guidance, her style was chosen as the best in the country. With the win comes cash and prizes of $50,000! One of them is a trip to a national cosmetology conference in Florida which she will attend with Ms. Shackleford, all expenses paid! Maria encouraged her classmates to continue work hard and put power in their studies. Trade Tech students also finished 2nd and 5th in the national competition, which is truly a remarkable showing. Trade Tech sits on top of the mountain again.
Congratulations to our Skills USA competitors
This year the Skills USA State Conference in San Diego was an amazing success! These students put in several hours of practice outside of class to prepare for the conference which consisted of written and oral exams as well as an intense skills competition. They were coached by our own talented Professor Robinson whose donated his time to lead our students to victory. We would like to personally thank Professor Robinson for his dedication and sacrifices he has made to ensure the success of our students.
The result of our team’s hard work was Jose Jimenez – Gold, Janelle Mercado- Silver and
Marla Bood – Bronze. Jose will be traveling to Kansas City on June 24 to compete during “The Week of Champions.” LATTC’s students will be on the national stage competing against the best of the best from across the entire nation. This is a multi-million dollar event that occupies a space equivalent to 16 football fields with nearly 6,000 competitors from all over the United States.
