Our efforts are designed to meet the needs of all Trade Tech students, as well as satisfying all educational and logistical regulations. Students will not get into every class they want, but they can give themselves the best chance possible by following these guidelines:

You MUST attend the first class session or you will be dropped from your class. If you have an emergency, you MUST contact your instructor or the department chair PRIOR to class.

It is YOUR responsibility to clear holds or to satisfy any pre-requisites.

It is very unlikely that any classes will be added to the current schedule.

You MUST have an add card in order to add a class. Process your add/drop cards as soon as possible.

It is YOUR responsibility to check with instructors to see if you are placed on the class roster. Notify your instructor immediately if you choose not to add.

Add/Drop Procedures for ALL Classes (except in TE building)

Attend the BEGINNING of the first class session.

Notify the instructor that you would like to add the class.

Add cards will be distributed at the discretion of the instructor once the first class session ends. You will be notified then, if you have secured an add slot. DO NOT LEAVE THE CLASS.

Take the add/drop cards to the designated add/drop processing line in South Campus.

Attend all subsequent class sessions, and verify over the next few days that your name has been added to the class roster.

If you have NOT satisfied the pre-requisites or have holds, but still receive an add card, you will not be processed.

Add/Drop Procedures for classes in TE building ONLY!

Attend the BEGINNING of the first class session.

Notify the instructor that you would like to add the class AND sign the list of students requesting an add spot. Names will be listed on a first-come, first-served basis.

If the instructor places the add list on the classroom door, there is NO need to enter the classroom. Just sign the list with the most reliable way of contacting you, and EXIT the building. You DO NOT have to be inside the classroom during the first class session, and please DO NOT wait in the hallways.

It has been a grueling summer for a group of women that have become the first all-female class to complete the utility line worker training at LATTC. The 22 ladies have finished the rigorous and challenging class under the tutelage of instructor Ken Bushman and now hope to test with the local utility companies, for a chance to work on the big poles throughout the region and the country. Last Friday, the class gathered for its historic graduation and there was an unmistakable camaraderie among the classmates. The women come from all kinds of backgrounds and experiences, but the physical test of climbing poles and learning about the critical skills of line workers, brought them together. They faced the exact same standards that their male counterparts face when they go through this amazing class.

The training was funded by Clean Energy Workforce Training Grant, a collaboration of the California Energy Commission, the California Employment Development Department, the Employment Training Panel, and the California Workforce Investment Board. This 11-week program included workplace safety, power pole climbing skills with certification, knowledge of the tools and materials involved with the electrical line crafts, general construction standards, basic rigging principles and basic electrical theory. In addition, LATTC partnered with Women In Non-Traditional Employment Roles (WINTER) to provide recruitment and job placement supportive services. The program was designed with industry partners including the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, San Diego Gas and Electric, Southern California Edison, Glendale Water and Power and other utility companies.

Congratulations need to go out to the Workforce and Economic Development department here at Trade Tech for putting together this program, under the leadership of VP Marcy Drummond and the energy and guidance of Dean Leticia Barajas. All of WED contributed to its success. Construction technology chair Bill Elarton also was instrumental in getting this class prepared. Of course, instructor Ken Bushman has been an incredible teacher and mentor.

The graduation event was covered by NBC and Univision 34 and by the Associated Press, which sent the story nationwide. That written piece was picked up by the Pasadena Star-News, the Ventura County Press and other newspapers in the area. Click on the link below…

All-female class climbs utility pole of success

By Raquel Maria Dillon The Associated Press

When Rita Romero showed up Friday for graduation at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, the other women in her class barely recognized her in a dress.
For four months of daily classes, they wore hard hats, boots and heavy work belts to clamber up poles and muscle their way into the profession of utility linemen, becoming the first all-female class at the school to earn their certificates in the trade.
“We’re not used to seeing each other dolled up,” said the former jewelry designer. “We’re out in the pole yard drenched in sweat.”
When the certificate ceremony was over, the women changed out of their dresses and summer suits to demonstrate the skills they hope will earn them well-paying jobs with local utilities.
“I truly enjoy climbing the poles. It’s an adrenaline rush, and I’ve earned my way to the top, literally,” Romero said.
The 22 women snapped photos and proudly introduced their families to their instructor, Ken Bushman, then scaled the utility poles in the trade school’s training yard.
Olga Legostayeva, who earned the instructors’ “best climber” award, perched 30 feet up with her feet angled against a wobbly utility pole to reach across to a classmate who clung to a nearby pole.
Linemen have traditionally been men and the work is physically demanding. Women hold only 2 percent of the utility transmission and distribution positions, said school administrator Leticia Barajas.
The class met every morning at 7 for physical conditioning and practice on the poles. In the afternoons the students studied electrical distribution and safety procedures until 5 p.m.
The long days were worth it, the women said, because utility companies are hiring and entry-level apprenticeships start at around $30 per hour in Southern California.
