ASSESSMENT – Frequently Asked Questions

Who needs an assessment test? All non-exempt students who plan on taking an English or Mathematics course and those students pursuing an Associate Degree/Transferring to the University.

What does it take to be exempt from taking the assessment test? Assessment, Counseling, and Orientation ACO exemption form please print and bring with you.

A student with:

• Valid assessment test scores from LATTC or another college taken within the last 2 years.

• Completion of English 21/English 100 and Math 105 (or higher) at LATTC with a grade of “C” or better.

• Completion of English and Math courses at another college with a “C” or better.

• An Associate’s Degree or higher.

• AP English and Calculus Exam Scores of 3 or higher taken within the last 2 years.
•EAP/Smarter Balanced Summative (SBA) Standard Exceeded (level 4) – must also provide CAASPP report.

Official transcript, test scores, or a college diploma MUST be provided for assessment test exemption.

What is the assessment test like?

LATTC offers computerized assessment testing. The test is adaptive. This means that the computer automatically determines which questions are presented, based on responses to prior questions. Unlike traditional tests, the computer tailors the test to the examinee. The background questions should be answered as honestly as possible.The background questions allow the computer to branch out to give the most appropriate test for the individual. Most students take English or ESL and Math test sections: English Native Language (ENL), English as a Second Language (ESL), Mathematics:

  • Reading Comprehension (20 questions)-ENL
  • Sentence Skills (20 questions)-ENL
  • Language Usage (20 questions)-ESL
  • Listening (20 questions)-ESL
  • Reading Skills (20 questions)-ESL
  • Sentence Meanings (20 questions)-ESL
  • Mathematics (17-20 questions)
    You may be asked to complete more than one mathematics (Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, College Level Math) test depending on your skill level.

What do I need to bring with me?

Students must bring a picture ID in order to take the test.There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy.The ID must be original, NO photocopies.Examples of ID include a California Driver’s License, California ID, a passport, or a high school picture ID.A current application for admission MUST be on file before taking the test. Please bring your student ID number issued by the college.

Do I need to study for this test?

It is important that you study and take the test to the best of your ability because this test affects the number of Mathematics and English courses a student can enroll in at LATTC.

How long is the test? The computerized assessment test is self-paced, not timed. However, the average student finishes in about 2 hours.

Is there a test available for non-native English speakers? Yes, there is English as a Second Language (ESL) version of the assessment test.

How long are the test scores valid? Test scores are valid for 2 years. If you feel your scores can be higher please see the Assessment Center for a Challenge Exam application.

How often can I re-test? Students are allowed to re-test once per term/semester, only if they have not started the course sequence for that subject.
