“A Mediterranean Christmas”
America’s premiere early music ensemble joins with members of the Sharq Arab Ensemble to bring a unique style and sensibility to our holiday program: the Christmas narrative retold using songs, chants, and instrumental pieces from the countries of the Mediterranean basin. Spain, Italy, and southern France in Europe, and also north Africa and the Middle East feature in this colorful and evocative program. With its inspiring vertical sweep, decorated vaulted ceilings, intricately carved woodwork and Batchelder tile floors, the imposing sanctuary of this French Gothic-inspired landmark church makes an exciting setting for this “jubilant and inspiring” (The Boston Globe) seasonal concert. “World class…a fascinating multicultural journey” (Detroit Free Press).
This concert is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, with additional funding from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles

The soaring women’s voices of Kitka are joined by Bulgarian diva Tzetanka Varimezova and gajda master Ivan Varimezov in music from the Eastern European spiritual traditions, woven together with the rich harmonies of ancient folk songs. “The rich sound these women produce resonates as if energized by the universe itself, as if it were calling all live beings and still matter into togetherness and unity” (San Francisco Chronicle). With solemn candlelight illuminating crystal chandeliers, antique marble and gold mosaics, an architectural and cultural landmark welcomes this extraordinary ensemble to an extraordinary setting for an unforgettable concert experience. “Angelic voices in complete unison…like Mother Earth herself had opened up her vocal cords” (Ledger Dispatch).
Byzantine-Latino Quarter Festival. Make a day of it with our self-guided tour of the neighborhood surrounding St. Sophia: the Byzantine-Latino Quarter. Explore this area rich in cultural diversity, enjoying public art works and discounts to area restaurants.
This concert is made possible in part by a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles.
