On Monday, July 13th, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa stopped by the campus for a tour of our Green Summer Youth Jobs program. The mayor stopped by the B-building and walked through the carpentry area, where he watched students learning “green” skills in areas like ductwork, weatherization and insulation. Once the classroom hours are completed, the students will take their “green” skills and move on to worksites and summer jobs. More than 110 students are going through the program and will begin work next week.

This program was created by Trade Tech’s Workforce Development arm. Vice President of Workforce and Economic Development, Marcy Drummond, along with Dean Leticia Barajas led today’s tour with the mayor, as he asked students about the training. Afterwards he held a news conference in the B-building, where he talked about the program and announced a $2 million dollar commitment from the city to assist in the venture at Trade Tech. Lots of media attended and the spotlight was on how Trade Tech has played an integral part in bringing this initiative to pass. LACCD Acting Chancellor Adriana Barrera and student Hugo Camey also spoke about how important these skills are. Hal Snyder of Southern California Gas and Mark Wilson of the Coalition for Responsible Community Develepment talked about how the industry needs these programs and future workers.

I think this is great becuase our world is changing so much and the green economy is being devopled so should our student should be prepared for it as well.
This is great! I'm so glad going "green" has become an acknowledged world issue.
It is great to see our youth getting basic "green" training as it is definitely the wave of the future. We need to drive this into them at at early age…
